Performing Artists who meet the eligibility requirement (below) qualify for discounted rates for pre-paid packages of sessions.


To be eligible you must provide proof of one of the following:

  • Membership in The Actor’s Guild, Broadway Cares or an approved Actors organization.
  • Enrollment in one of the accredited Vocal, Music, Dance or Actor’s programs in New York City.
  • Employment within the last 12 months in a New York City film or dance production or involvement in a local stage performance.
  • A letter of verification from a club owner, bandleader, manager or employer stating their involvement in the Arts.
  • Verification of their involvement in the Arts via a website with a clear photo present, audio/video clips on the site or a current performance schedule.

Stimulants . . . How Much is too Much?

Is your breakfast a cup of coffee... and maybe a bagel or a piece of toast to go with it? Or are you the conscious sort and make a stop at Jamba Juice for a "nutrition packed" smoothy?


What happens around 10:00 AM? Do you feel the need for another "bump" of caffeine? Maybe this is 3-4 PM for you? Do you head for the snack bar and grab a diet coke?... a donut?


Or are you in the "worse case scenario" category? Do you chug a Red Bull... or one of it's badly labeled cohorts like 5-hour Energy, Monster, or ReLoad?


If you do, you're like millions of your neighbors across the country. We just need to keep up our energy right? We need to go, go, go... collapse on the weekend, only to start all over again on Monday. Whew, I'm tired just thinking about it!!


Brewed coffee has about 135 milligrams of caffeine in it. 179 miligrams if it's roasted and ground with a filter drip. (like I like it) Now I'm not saying a kick start in the morning is all bad. If we limited it to 300-400 mg a day (at maximum!) we'd all be fine and I wouldn't be writing this article.

But . . . How many of us do that? After that second cup and the rush it gives us we look for that boost later when we "come down", when the day gets long, when we're stressed, bored, and on and on. Essentially when we need a "pick-me-up"... right?


Let me tell you what's going on physiologicialy though. Your Central Nervous System goes nuts!! Like cocaine and other drugs, caffeine in excess is able to fool the neuro receptors in your brain by appearing to be adenosine, the chemical that your brain produces while you sleep to help shut you down.


Your blood vessels constrict, limiting the amount of oxygen traveling to your brain and your pituitary gland releases adrenoline because it thinks its in fight or flight mode. Cold hands and feet, elevated heart rate and muscle constriction follow. To top it all off, dopamine levels increase in your brain, which helps the drug become addictive. Now, did you want one or two sugars in that coffee . . . ?


But wait, while most folks will gasp just a bit at this news, I know some who will say hmm?? That sounds like just what I need before I go out to a club... or dancing. Enter, the second level stimulants, Red Bull and company. A few years back a new trend surfaced... a dangerous one. Red Bull and vodka... and many other iterations.


Here's the problem: Red Bull is a stimulant, liquor is a depressant. Combining them produces a neurologically impaired drunk. Isn't drunk bad enough? Now we have a drunk who doesn't know he's drunk. He gets in his car and has no sense of his reflexes and well... you can fill in the rest of the story.


See Cleveland Browns wide receiver Donte Stallworth, who combined a couple of tequila shots with a Red Bull in March of 2009 and killed a pedestrian. He said he didn't even feel drunk...


Red Bull is banned in France and the Phillipines, and labeled with "extreme caution" in many other places around the world. Take charge and "ban" it and any other excessive caffeine habits presently in your life. No one ever needs excess. You are enough just as you are.


Research has shown that low doses of caffeine may promote improved cognitive function. Have your cup of coffee in the morning if you want, then let your day unfold naturally. Find a balance and stick with it, even if more caffeine feels like it will help.


You may experience a withdrawal headache at first, but then you'll find a clarity you haven't had in years. Finally, whenever possible . . . if you're tired, stop, get off the bus, go home and take a nap.







How much water should you drink?

I've taken to investigating my patient's water consumption more closely of late. With all the information that we get bombarded with that we aren't drinking enough water, that water consumption is the key to weight loss, clear skin, better sleep ... better sex ... and the ability to have more money in the bank, (All right, that last one was me exaggerating) it's no wonder that we are creating a water-logged population. The truth is... in appropriate doses, all of the above is true. Consuming the right amount of water is a good habit.


Question: Do you count vegetables, fruit, grains and cooked beans when you calculate your water consumption? Guess what percentage of a grape is water? Answer:  80%!  How about those 2 glasses of wine you had at dinner? Most glaringly, did your consider the soup you had for lunch when you counted?


Guess what percentage of soup is just plain ol' water?  Answer: 90%! Unless you consume a lot of salt or exercise more than the average person, I'm going to go against the grain and wonder whether you need any extra water at all!


The filtration system that exists in your kidneys is composed in part by a series of specialized capillary beds called glomeruli. Besides having to filter waste products from the food that we metabolize, prescription drugs, and dead cells from our blood, our kidneys are forced to handle any excess liquid that we choose to intake.


Your glomeruli can and will be drowned by forcing excess fluids through your system, and the sad thing is you won't even know it. There are no obvious symptoms that indicate whether you are consuming too much water.


Ingesting more water than you need, can increase your total blood volume. Since your blood volume exists within a closed system - your circulatory system - needlessly increasing your blood volume on a regular basis puts unnecessary burden on your heart and blood vessels. This also imbalances the electrolytes in your blood, seeping water into your cells and causing them to swell.


Where we go wrong is thinking that if 8 glasses is recommended, then 10 - 16 glasses must better. This is the American logic: Bigger is better . . . Work hard . . . and then harder if you want to be the best.  Instead I want to suggest that you pay attention to your body's needs, that you simply notice whether you're thirsty or not ... and stop listening to some external advise or number that some expert claims is "right", and most likely does not relate to you at all.


You pretty much have to rely on your own good judgment. You have to pay attention! The sooner we realize that each body is different from the other, and that each of us needs different food, exercise, rest etc. the healthier we will all be.
